Budget 2014 - No Tax Exemption for Hybrid Cars?

Budget 2014 was announced earlier today by our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, which covered from the 6% Goods and Services Tax (GST) to aid for low income households. Unfortunately, there is no mention about incentives for hybrid cars in his speech.

Currently, the import tax and excise duty of hybrid cars are exempted, enabling Malaysian to afford hybrid cars at a more reasonable price. However, this benefit is only available up to 31st of December 2013, which is the last day of this year. If the exemption is abolished, Malaysian will not have affordable pricing for some popular hybrid cars such as the Honda Jazz Hybrid at RM90k and Toyota Prius at RM140k, not to mention the luxurious Lexus CT200h at RM170k and Audi A6 Hybrid at sub RM300k price.

Hopefully some sort of announcement will be made before the end of this year to rectify about this issue. Same goes to the fate of electric vehicle (EV). The tax exemption for green cars should be continued as they produce lesser harmful emission to the environment and provide saving in petrol bill. Let's hope the fate of hybrid tax exemption won't be the same as sugar!

*UPDATE: Good news! National Automotive Policy (NAP) will continue to provide incentives for hybrid cars and Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV).

Audi Q3 Preview in KL!

After Santa Claus came to town, Euromobil brings the Audi Q3 which is going to be launched in Malaysia next year to town! The Audi Q3 is here due to its ASEAN preview tour and a unit of Q3 will be available for viewing in two of Audi's showrooms in the Klang Valley, as stated in the picture above. (I would prefer they show the Q3 in public places like shopping centres)

The compact SUV (rivals are eg. BMW X1 and Volkswagen Tiguan) will have a 2.0-litre TFSI 4-cylinder engine which can churn out 170bhp and 280Nm of torque from as low as 1700rpm, and mated with a 7-speed S-tronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive. Official price list is not announced yet, but expect it to be competitive.

Personally I'm not a fan of the Audi Q3's design. Yes, it looks rugged and solid, but it lacks of emotion and excitement. From far I might think that the Q3 is a Q5! Both design is just a tad too similar. But I'm sure it's still a great car with above average quality and drivability.

Audi Urban Concept - 1+1 Seat!

We might be looking at the revolution of motorcycle in my opinion. Why I would say so? It is because the concept car above - Audi Urban Concept comes with 1+1 seat! The electric-powered Urban Concept is an ultra-light car designed specially for congested traffic in the urban area, you can zig zag in the traffic easily with its compact exterior dimension. However, this doesn't mean that the Urban Concept is a city car, as it is built with the elements of fun and racing style other than for city.

The wheels are free standing with protective plates surrounding them. The plates also feature blinking strips of LED lights on them, how cool is that!

Slide the one piece door and roof to the back will reveal a racing themed interior. There's only room for two, where the passenger will sit slightly to the back to maintain a comfortable shoulder space in the narrow cabin. The driver can adjust the steering wheel and pedals to his own body measurements.

Would love to see the Urban Concept to make it into production! It will be a hit to city drivers!

The Uninspired, Funny, Weird... You Name It!

Car design is one of the most important aspect when choosing a car because it's the first impression to the buyers about the car. While some cars are designed like Megan Fox and Brad Pitt, some are just plain white paper, funny like a clown and Edward Scissorhands.

Here are some examples of today's cars with uninspired, boring, amusing, bizarre... you name it!

Really Honda? The "Lightning Bolt" beltline with drop down window line on the Honda Odyssey is to increase the visibility of the 3rd row passengers? The end result is worse than a Skoda Roomster and made the Odyssey look butt-heavy.

Did Audi shrunk the front end of A1 and the side profile of Q5, tweaked them a little, combined them and call it as Q3? Boring...

Perhaps this time Nissan tried too hard to make its Sunny ditch the usual hatchback-convert-sedan rear-end look? Proportion is way out in this case...

The Opel Combo (ran out of names for a car?) above looks like an illustration for the successor of 1st gen Perodua Myvi! Or Perodua is selling their 1st gen Myvi's headlight to Opel to reduce their old stock? On the bright side, the wacky styling of the Combo will put a smile on your face.

The more I look at the BMW 1-Series, the more it looks like the end result of a nose job gone wrong... We beg for a facelift immediately!

2011 Audi A6 !

The highly anticipated Audi A6 is unveiled, and bears a very familiar design of Audi like its predecessor and its 'siblings'. Some say the Audi single-frame front fascia is starting to look boring. I do agree, but not on this A6...

Audi cars always fascinate me with their LED strip in their headlights. Especially in the R8 and A4 where the sexy LED strip gave the car a very sporty feel. Audi did their job well on the all-new A6 too! But I would appreciate it if the lines which flows from the side profile to the headlights can be executed more 'sexily', like what they what they had done for their A7 sportback.

While the back looks more similar now to the rest of Audi's product-lineup, the design is somehow lack of inspiration to me...

The Audi A6 comes with a choice of 5 engines: two petrol engines and three TDI units. These powerplants develop between 177 hp and 300 hp. All of these engines make use of important technologies from Audi's modular efficiency platform – the start-stop system, the energy recovery system, and the innovative thermal management concept.

There's a hybrid version of A6, where the A6 hybrid has a 211 hp 2.0 TFSI, works together with an electric motor that delivers 45 hp and 211 Nm (155.63 lb-ft) of torque. The electric motor sits directly behind the TFSI, occupying the space of the torque converter upstream of the modified 8-speed tiptronic.

MMI navigation plus in the new Audi A6 is closely networked with the optional assistance and safety systems. The systems recognize complex scenarios and assist the driver. In many situation, the Audi pre sense safety system is able to minimize accidents and their consequences, or even prevent them altogether, by warning the driver and applying the brakes with increasing force to slow the sedan down in an emergency.

The system, at the same time, closes the windows and the sunroof, tightens the seat belts, activates the hazard warning lights and stiffens the dampers of the optional adaptive air suspension. Works kind of like Mercedes Pre-Safe System...
